Accountability
Current events in the life of our country highlights how bad we need a fresh Awakening from God. While I haven’t been very “In tune” with the new administration now leading our nation, the little I have heard verifies the fears many godly people had about him winning the election. Sadly, many people who love God seem to have no real understanding about the far-reaching results that will come from decisions made in Obama’s first 100 days.
One thing is certain, we continue to be a nation that lives as though there will never be a time to give account for our sins. Accountability is certainly not on the minds of those who “call the shots” for our country. One of the great statesmen in the early days of our country’s development, Daniel Webster, was attending a luncheon with some other government leaders. He was asked: “What is the greatest thought that has ever passed through your head?” Without hesitation Webster replied: “My accountability to God.” It has been proven many times that our early founders had a deep down faith in Jesus Christ and sought to establish a nation where Christ could be exalted without interference from the government!
In our DOWNPOUR Series we are going to look at the final “THRONE-in-Heaven” scene found in the Bible. It is in Revelation 20:11-15. It is the last thing that occurs before God establishes His Eternal Kingdom for those who have trusted in His Grace for our salvation. Daniel Webster had it right! This passage describes the ultimate ACCOUNTABILITY to GOD! For those who have some exposure to God’s Word, this event is known as “The Great White Throne Judgment.” The books are open! The heart-secrets and impure motives are exposed. The time for payment arrives — an Installment plan that lasts forever!
A great Evangelist, R.G. Lee, (who incidentally preached at Washington Avenue Church in the past) had a message that brought people to a place of conviction and salvation. The message was called: “PayDay Someday!” In the first Great Awakening another preacher, Jonathan Edwards, is remembered for a sermon that resulted in masses of people giving their heart to Jesus. The message was called: “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” People literally trembled and cried out loud in fear of the Judgment that was described in Revelation 20:11-15.
I believe any significant MOVEMENT by GOD begins when His people once again bow in reverence and rise in devotion to the HOLY Standards of GOD! Until we are stirred deep within our hearts about the END of ALL JUDGMENTS, we will not be able to passionately, compassionately, and effectively point people to the ONLY ONE who an SAVE them from this horrible END!!
Please be much in prayer for this Sunday’s services at Washington Avenue. Could it be the DAY when GOD shows up with a DOWNPOUR of His Holy Spirit like we’ve never experienced? Could it be the DAY when God saves someone who has been “playing church” for so long? Could it be the DAY when your family member or friend comes to God’s House and really gets it?

Did George Whitfield also preach the sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”? Just so you know I do listen to you and read your blog. Awesome day at WAC!
Actually the sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” was preached by Jonathan Edwards. Whitfield was a major player in the massive revival but did not have a similar sermon. Thanks for reading and commenting.
