SUMC hosts 21st National Telemedicine Educational Symposium

On November 13, 2018, the 22nd National Telemedicine Educational Symposium, supported by Ministry of Education, National Health and Family Planning Commission, Li Ka Shing Foundation and China Education Television, was held at the 101 Lecture Hall, SUMC Medical Education Center. This year, the symposium was jointly organized by Shantou University Medical College, Penn State College of Medicine and School of Medicine, University of Crete.

Dr. Alexandros Vgontzas from Penn State College of Medicine and Dr. Maria Basta from School of Medicine, University of Crete, delivered lectures in “sleep medicine” at the symposium. Dr. Alexandros Vgontzas gave a presentation on his research on insomnia with short sleep duration and what are the pathophysiology, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment implications. His research findings suggested that validation of two common phenotypes of insomnia defined by objective sleep duration will improve treatment outcomes and potentially reduce adverse health consequences associated with insomnia and its treatments. Dr. Maria Basta in her speech introduced their research in sleep, cognition, and inflammation in elderly population and shared their findings from the Cretan aging cohort. Dr. Basta pointed out that the prevalence of insomnia-type symptoms in elders is associated with increased risk for cognitive impairment and suggested combined interventions targeting several life-style parameters to decrease inflammation and improve or delay cognitive decline among elderly. Their research also found that long sleep duration may be an early biologic marker of accelerated cognitive decline within multi domain subtypes of MCI, while objective daytime sleepiness may be a biologic marker of the severity of the dementia in demented patients.

The Symposium concluded with an active question and answer session. Both the on-site and online audience actively participated in the discussions through internet-based BBS. The Symposium was live-broadcasted on the internet; audience could watch it on line by clicking those links on the web. China Education Television also broadcasted the Symposium on its Network Television website.
